Once upon a time... I made a comic

Updated: Oct 22, 2019

For my first week of teaching, which was on September 19th, I went over the basic structure of a comic. When I told the students we would be making a comic, there were lots of cheers, and I could tell that they were excited. We started by reading a section of their book and came up with a list of 4 main events that happened. Next, we looked at an example of a comic from another author and looked at a comic I made on the three little pigs. Once they understood what a comic needed to have to be successful, we dove into the first element of art, line. I asked the class for different types of lines and we came up with a long list. We used this list to come up with types of bubbles that can be used in a comic: speech bubbles, thought bubble, sound bubbles, etc. I gave them time to practice so they could get an idea about how big they would need to be to fit in a scene and be able to fit words inside. Everyone was very engaged and was trying out different techniques. After this, they were ready to begin their comics. Some of the students struggled with knowing where to begin with their drawings and some students were much faster than others, but with help and encouragement, they were all able to create a great comic. Although time ran out before some could finish, I was very impressed with the outcome of their work. I could tell that everyone put a lot of effort in and included many different elements of line in their comics. Next week, I will go over drawing people with the students because a few kids struggled with this aspect of their drawings and it will be a big part of finishing their comic books throughout the rest of my time with them.
