We Can All Be a Superhero

This last week's lesson was focused on learning how to draw people, which is an important component when it comes to creating comics. I decided to do this because after the first week's lesson, I noticed that some students were struggling with even drawing stick figures. I wanted the students to all have drawing people down, so they can focus on different elements of art in the coming weeks. In order to give them easy-to-follow and repeatable steps, I focused on using shapes that the students had learned before: circles, rectangles, trapezoids, etc. Once they had the chance to practice drawing a person, they got with a partner, learned about their partner, and turned their partner into a superhero using the outline of a person that I taught them. This activity seemed to have a lot of benefits: the students were able to work on their communication skills, practice applying outside knowledge to an art project, and discover positive attributes they possess and their classmates possess. They seemed to have a lot of fun with this lesson and were super excited to share with their partners at the end. Their ability to draw people improved drastically and I am excited to see them continue to grow in their art abilities.
